Flax Meal

Flax seed comes from the flax plant known as Linum usitatissimum. Grown in cooler regions of Europe, Asia and the Mediterranean, flax has grown in popularity in western civilization as a nutritional supplement that can be added to just about any dish. Flax meal is milled from the whole seed making it easier to integrate into many dishes or recipes.

Flaxseed offers a subtle, nutty flavor. They naturally vary in color from golden yellow to reddish brown. The trendy supplement is packed with fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, delivering an added boost of wellness. To absorb the many rich nutrients, including magnesium, thiamine, potassium and phosphorous, flax is commonly ground into flax seed meal. Processed this way, it creates a smoother texture than whole flax seed and can be disguised in a variety of foods. Add flax seed meal to dressings, smoothies, baking batter and dough or sprinkle it on cereals, yogurt, vegetable bowls and salads.

Studies have shown the nutrients in flax seed help to lower the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Flax has also been proven to reduce cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and aid digestion and constipation. While the omega-3 fatty acids found in abundance in flax seed are thought to prevent the development of cancer cells, flax also contains exorbitant amounts of lignans, believed to stop the growth of tumors.

Flaxseed can be consumed as whole seeds or our ground meal, but is also available medicinally as an oil, and in capsule form. Interestingly, the fibers of the flax plant are also cultivated for textiles in the western world including linens for beds, tables and underclothes.
